ICYMI – Delaney Gaining Notice for Early State Work

WASHINGTON – Last weekend, Delaney made his tenth campaign trip to New Hampshire, meeting with voters and supporting local State Senate Candidates Bill Bolton and Mason Donovan. Last month, Delaney endorsed and donated to 20 New Hampshire candidates.

Delaney has already been to Iowa twelve times and next month, Delaney will return for a multi-day, multi-county swing through the state. Delaney is slated to speak at the Des Moines Register Soapbox at the Iowa State Fair and will headline the Iowa Democratic Wing Ding on August 10th.

Delaney has paid staff on the ground in both early states and has had a field office open in Des Moines since November. By the end of next week, Delaney will also have Iowa staff in Sioux City, Cedar Rapids and Davenport. Monica Biddix joined Delaney’s campaign as Iowa Communications Director last month.

This cycle, Delaney has invested nearly $400K in Iowa and New Hampshire campaigns and committees.

Sioux-City Journal – “Iowans beginning to recognize Delaney”

  • With a Jimmy Carter out-of-nowhere approach, Maryland Rep. John Delaney is quietly raising his profile in Iowa. He’s campaigned in 72 of Iowa’s 99 counties.
  • A poll by Harrison Hickman, once John Edwards’ pollster, found that more than half — 52 percent — of likely 2020 Democratic caucusgoers recognize his name. He leads Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar, as well as Terry McAuliffe, John Hickenlooper and Julian Castro in name recognition in Iowa.

The Guardian – “John Delaney has not only formally announced his candidacy, he has crisscrossed the cornfields of Iowa”

  • One presidential hopeful has been much more active than anyone else. John Delaney, a member of Congress from Maryland, has not only formally announced his candidacy, he has crisscrossed the cornfields of Iowa.
  • So far, he has made 12 different visits and held events in 72 of the 99 counties.
  • Delaney, who is funding himself, has been buying TV ads in Iowa, something no other candidate has done so early. The result is that a poll taken in the spring had his name identification among caucusgoers above 50% already. Jake Oeth, state director for Martin O’Malley in 2016, observed that the former Maryland governor never reached that level, even on caucus day after tirelessly covering the state.

Concord Monitor – “One year in, is Rep. John Delaney’s early White House bid paying off in N.H.?”

  • It was the Maryland Democrat’s 10th trip to the first-in-the-nation presidential primary state since last July, when he became the first person to declare his candidacy for president.
  • He explained that besides his 10 trips to New Hampshire, he’s also made 12 swings through Iowa, the state that kicks off the caucus and primary calendar. He said he’s done more than 200 events in both states combined.
